Library saves the (special) day

Ystradgynlais Library Wildlife and Wellbeing Garden is providing joy to the community, with roses and a host of summer perennials in full flower.

A newcomer to the area reported: "I was feeling really low and stressed when I came in, but I can see why you say the garden is good for wellbeing and wildlife. After an hour sitting enjoying the flowers and the birdsong, I feel absolutely marvellous."

The first holiday activity for the children was a tour of the fruit and vegetables grown for the community to help themselves to, including tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers, runner beans and strawberries, followed by a seed planting activity. A few weeks ago, the birds had a good feast of cherries!

In fact, the garden recently ‘saved the day’ for one of our special visitors…

With the Registrar being based at Ystradgynlais Library, the branch is often used as a wedding venue.  At a wedding this July, the bride was due any minute, when the mother of the bride realised that there was no bouquet for the bride to carry! With no florist nearby, some creative thinking was needed…

Luckily, the library garden was looking especially beautiful at the moment, so staff were able to grab the secateurs and cut some marguerites, lilies and roses ("Storyteller" and "Lady of Shalott", to be precise - all the library roses have a literary theme); some tissue paper from the Children's Activities resources and a little ribbon from the Sewing Group box completed the ensemble, and with seconds to spare, bride and maid of honour were greeted with two charming bouquets.

It is not often that a customer enquiry involves staff in quite so much creative fun!
